Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada. You can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old and a:
- Canadian citizen or
- person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or
- permanent resident of Canada
You can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or dependent children.
Your spouse
Your spouse can be either sex and must be:
- legally married to you
- at least 18 years old
- isn’t legally married to you
- can be either sex
- is at least 18 years old
- has been living with you for at least 12 consecutive months, meaning you’ve been living together continuously for 1 year in a conjugal relationship
Dependent children
Children qualify as dependants if they meet both of these requirements:
- they’re under 22 years old
- they don’t have a spouse or common law partner

To apply to sponsor your spouse, partner or child, there are 2 applications:
- You must apply to become a sponsor.
- Your spouse, partner or child must apply for permanent residence.

Sponsor your parents/grandparents
The first step to sponsor your parents or grandparents is filling out the interest to sponsor form. Once invited to apply, complete application is submitted. The invitations are set for a particular number for the year decided by the IRCC.
Other option for your parents/grandparents to come to Canada is Supervisa.
Supervisa
A super visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren for up to 5 years at a time. It’s a visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years.
There are specific requirements for a super visa, including the need for medical insurance.
You must meet all the criteria to be eligible.
With the introduction of recent changes, all Supervisa holders who enter Canada after July4, 2022 can stay in Canada for upto 5 years at a time.
